Western North Carolina Pool Renovation & Resurfacing

WNC pool renovation done for the mountains, not the flatlands. We resurface and replaster gunite pools in plaster, quartz, and pebble; replace frost-rated tile and coping; rebuild decks; modernize equipment to the DOE variable-speed standard; convert to saltwater; and find and fix leaks — for homes, HOAs, hotels, rentals, and clubs across Western North Carolina.

01 · Renovation services

Six renovation services — the whole pool, not just the plaster.

Most WNC pools need more than a recoat. We scope the finish, tile, coping, deck, equipment, and structure as one project so the work ties together and you mobilize a crew once. Start with the full services overview or jump to a specific line below.

02 · Why a renovation-first, data-rich firm

Built for mountain pools — finish quality and honest numbers over the lowest bid.

We are a renovation specialist — not a new-pool builder working renovations on the side. The Western NC market is almost entirely gunite and shotcrete pools that need resurfacing every 8–20 years, tile and coping that fails at elevation, and decades-old equipment pads running illegal single-speed pumps. That is the work we do every day, and it shapes how we scope, price, and sequence a project across Asheville, Brevard, and the rest of the region.

Cost transparency comes first. Pool renovation quotes are notoriously vague, so we publish real ranges and back them with a resurfacing cost calculator and a regional WNC pool renovation cost guide. A standard resurface runs $4–7/sq ft in plaster, $5–8/sq ft in quartz, and $9–12/sq ft in pebble; a full dated-pool remodel lands between $20,000 and $60,000. You see the drivers — pool size, finish grade, repairs, and access — before you commit to anything.

Mountain-slope expertise matters here. Hauling a chip-out crew, gunite, and finish material to a pool perched on a Lake Toxaway or Cliffs-at-Walnut-Cove hillside is a different job than a flat suburban lot. Hillside access, retaining walls, and deck drainage on graded WNC lots all change the plan. Expansive clay soil and seasonal water movement also drive a disproportionate share of the structural cracks we repair, which is why we read the site, not just the pool.

We do start-up by the book. A new plaster or aggregate finish lives or dies in its first 30 days, so we follow the National Plasterers Council start-up method and the ANSI/APSP/ICC/NPC-12 plastering standard — controlled brushing and water balance that prevent the mottling, scaling, and spot-etching that ruin a finish poured by a low bidder. As a member of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, we manage chemistry to CPO and LSI standards through the cure.

Equipment is upgraded to current federal code. Most pump replacements now must be variable-speed under the U.S. DOE dedicated-purpose pool pump standard — and that is also the fastest-payback upgrade we install, typically recovering its cost in roughly 1.5–3 years on a home with high summer energy bills. We pair variable-speed pumps with automation, LED lighting, and heat pumps sized for season extension in a cold climate.

Finally, we build for freeze-thaw durability. At Waynesville and Cashiers elevations, only frost-rated porcelain or glass tile and dense, properly drained coping survive the freeze cycle, and pebble or quartz interiors outlast marcite by years. Whether you are a homeowner, an HOA board, or a realtor prepping a listing, the goal is the same: a finish that still looks right a decade from now.

WNC pool renovation questions, answered

How much does it cost to renovate a pool in the WNC mountains?
A standard interior resurface on an average ~1,000 sq ft residential pool runs $6,000–$15,000 (most land near $11,000): $4–7/sq ft for plaster, $5–8/sq ft for quartz, and $9–12/sq ft for premium pebble. A full dated-pool remodel — finish, tile and coping, deck, and a DOE-compliant equipment pad — typically runs $20,000–$60,000. Western NC projects can price above flatland work because of mountain-slope access, freeze-proofing detail, and clay-soil prep. Estimate your own scope with our pool resurfacing cost calculator or read the full WNC pool renovation cost guide.
What areas of Western North Carolina do you serve for pool renovation?
We renovate pools across 9 WNC counties — Henderson, Buncombe, Transylvania, Rutherford, Polk, Haywood, Madison, Jackson, and Macon — from our Hendersonville base. Core markets are Asheville, Brevard, Lake Lure, Tryon, and Waynesville, including outlying communities like Flat Rock, Biltmore Forest, Lake Toxaway, Chimney Rock, and Maggie Valley. We routinely travel to lake and remote mountain properties — Lake Lure and Lake Toxaway estate pools included. See every town and county on the service-area directory.
How long does a typical pool resurfacing project take?
Most resurfacing projects run 1–2 weeks from drain to refill. The shell sequence — drain, chip-out or bond coat, surface prep, finish application, and cure — is usually 5–9 working days, then a careful NPC-method start-up brushes and balances the water over the following weeks as the new plaster cures. Bundling tile, coping, or deck work adds a few days but saves a second mobilization. Weather matters in the mountains: we avoid pouring finish in a hard freeze, which is why larger remodels are often scheduled for the shoulder season.
Do you work on residential, HOA, and commercial pools?
Yes — we renovate private residential and luxury pools, HOA and community amenity pools, hotel and resort pools, vacation rentals, and country-club and aquatic facilities. Commercial and community pools are regulated public pools under NC Rules Governing Public Swimming Pools (15A NCAC 18A .2500), requiring CPO-level water management, VGBA anti-entrapment drains, and ADA access — work we document for boards and inspectors. Residential jobs over $40,000 fall under our NC Swimming Pools specialty contractor classification.
What pool finishes hold up best to cold mountain winters?
Pebble and quartz aggregate finishes outlast standard white plaster in WNC's freeze-thaw climate — pebble lasts 15–20+ years versus roughly 8–12 years for marcite. The bigger durability question is usually the waterline tile and coping: only frost-rated porcelain or glass tile (ANSI A137.1) and dense, properly drained natural-stone coping resist the spalling that destroys non-rated tile at elevation. For finish chemistry and longevity standards we follow the National Plasterers Council technical manual and ANSI/APSP/ICC/NPC-12. See finish options on the resurfacing page.
Are you licensed and insured for pool work in North Carolina?
Yes. We carry NC general-contractor licensing in the Swimming Pools specialty classification (required for projects over $40,000), general liability on every project, and workers' compensation per NC statute. For equipment and electrical scope we work to NEC Article 680 pool bonding and grounding, and as a Pool & Hot Tub Alliance firm we manage water chemistry to CPO standards. On commercial and HOA jobs we provide the documentation boards and inspectors need under NC public-pool rules. Start with a free on-site assessment.
What is the best time of year to renovate a pool in the mountains?
Fall through early spring is ideal in Western NC. Renovating in the off-season means a fresh finish is cured and ready before swim season, avoids competing for peak-season scheduling, and lets us pour plaster outside hard-freeze windows. Vacation-rental and hotel owners specifically target the shoulder season to protect booking revenue — see vacation-rental renovation. If your pool is actively losing water or has a structural crack, don't wait — untreated leaks rust rebar and let hydrostatic pressure damage the shell year-round.
