Pump, plumbing & valve swap

The old single-speed pump comes out; the variable-speed unit is set, the pad is re-plumbed as needed for flow, and unions and valves are replaced so future service is clean. We program the pump's speed curve — low RPM for filtration, higher for heating, cleaning, and water features — which is where the 50–80% energy savings actually come from.

Heater / heat pump, filter & light install

Gas heater or heat pump is set, gas or condensate and electrical run to code, and the manufacturer start-up sequence is followed for warranty (Raypak, Pentair MasterTemp/UltraTemp, Hayward Universal H-Series/HeatPro). Are variable-speed pumps required by code in North Carolina?
Effectively yes. The federal DOE Dedicated-Purpose Pool Pump rule (effective July 19, 2021) requires variable-speed or variable-flow motors for nearly every dedicated pool pump above 1.1 total horsepower — which covers the vast majority of in-ground residential pumps sold today. North Carolina enforces this through normal equipment replacement; a contractor can't simply drop in a new single-speed motor on most pools.
