The deck is the part of a pool people actually stand on, and in Western North Carolina it takes the hardest beating of anything around the water. Pool deck renovation means resurfacing or rebuilding the hardscape that rings the shell — with a thin cementitious overlay, stamped and colored concrete, concrete pavers, or travertine and natural stone — and, just as importantly, correcting the drainage, slope, and expansion joints underneath. It is one of the six core renovations we run, and it is almost always done in the same drain-down as new coping and waterline tile so the deck-to-pool transition is clean and watertight.
You need deck work when the surface stops doing its job. The common triggers we see across Hendersonville, Asheville, and the lake communities are: spider-web and settlement cracks spreading across the concrete; sections that have heaved or sunk so the deck no longer drains away from the pool; hollow, drummy coping or deck that has delaminated; a bare gray slab that gets too hot to walk on in July; surface spalling and flaking from years of freeze-thaw and pool chemistry; and trip hazards or pooling water that fail an insurance or pre-sale inspection. A deck that channels water toward the shell instead of away is more than cosmetic — it feeds the structural cracking and hydrostatic pressure that damage the pool itself.
The decision is usually overlay versus replace. If the slab is structurally sound and simply tired, a bonded overlay renews it for $3–$10 per square foot without demolition. If the concrete has heaved from expansive clay, lost its sub-base to a leak, or has irreparable structural cracks, replacement with a flexible paver or travertine system is the durable answer. Either way, the renovation is a chance to fix the original sins most WNC decks were built with — too little slope, no drainage for hillside runoff, and hard-grouted joints that crack the first winter.

We walk the full deck with the owner, map every settlement crack, hollow (drummy) section, and ponding low spot, and shoot grades with a laser level to confirm the deck slopes away from the shell — the 1/4-inch-per-foot of fall the ANSI/APSP/ICC-5 residential standard intends. For a full replacement, the old slab is saw-cut, removed, and the sub-base re-compacted. For an overlay we diamond-grind and shot-blast the existing concrete to a clean bond profile, rout and fill cracks, and verify the slab is sound and dry with core checks — a topping only lasts if the concrete beneath it is stable.
We rebuild a compacted aggregate base, re-establish positive slope away from the coping, and install channel and area drains (Deck-O-Drain / NDS) where the original deck trapped water. On hillside pools we add a trench drain on the uphill side so snowmelt and storm runoff never cross the surface and undermine the shell.
New concrete decks are formed and reinforced with rebar or mesh tied into the pool's equipotential bonding grid per NEC Article 680 — the code that bonds all conductive shell-side metal to a common ground. Expansion joints are placed against the coping and at control lines, never poured monolithic to the shell, following ACI concrete-placement practice.
The finish goes down to spec: a cementitious Sundek/Kool Deck spray texture, an integrally colored stamped pour, or set travertine and Belgard pavers on a compacted or mortar bed locked with polymeric joint sand. Stamped and overlay surfaces are broadcast with a slip-resistant aggregate so the deck grips when wet.
Expansion joints get a self-leveling polyurethane sealant — not hard grout — so freeze-thaw movement is absorbed instead of cracking the slab. Concrete and overlays are properly cured, then sealed with a breathable, UV-stable, slip-rated sealer. We hand off a care sheet with a re-seal interval, typically every 2–3 years at mountain elevation.
Every deck we build follows the same six phases whether it is a 500 sq ft overlay refresh in town or a full travertine rebuild on a Lake Lure hillside. The order matters: we solve water and slope first, structure second, and the visible surface last — because a beautiful deck on bad drainage fails, and a poured slab that cannot move with the soil cracks.
The non-negotiables are the ones generalists skip: bonding the deck reinforcing into the pool's NEC Article 680 equipotential grid, sealing expansion joints with flexible polyurethane instead of hard grout, and engineering positive drainage off a sloped lot. For a structural shell crack uncovered during demolition, we fold in structural repair before the new deck closes it in.
Cementitious overlays (Sundek, Kool Deck). A spray-applied cement texture bonded to a sound existing slab, the cool-deck overlay is the fastest, most affordable refresh at $3–$6 per square foot. Its open texture stays noticeably cooler underfoot than bare concrete — a real advantage on a sun-baked mountain-home deck — and it can be tinted to match coping and stone. A decorative micro-topping (SureCrete and similar) at $6–$10 goes a step further, hiding surface cracking and wear with a troweled, sealable finish. Overlays only work over stable concrete, so they are the right call for a tired-but-sound slab, not a heaved one.
Stamped & colored concrete. At $8–$20 per square foot, integrally colored concrete stamped to mimic stone, slate, or wood plank gives a custom, seamless look for a mid-range budget, and it is popular on newer in-town decks across Henderson County. The keys to making it last in the mountains are correct expansion-joint layout, a slip-resistant broadcast in the sealer, and integral rather than surface color so chips don't show. Multi-color and intricate-pattern designs reach about $25 per square foot.
Pavers & travertine. The premium, freeze-thaw-resilient tier — concrete pavers (Belgard, Techo-Bloc) at $14–$24 and travertine at $15–$27 installed. Because they sit on a compacted base and lock with polymeric sand rather than pour as one rigid slab, pavers flex with seasonal soil movement instead of cracking, and a settled section can be lifted and re-leveled. Travertine stays cool and is naturally slip-friendly, which is why it dominates the luxury and vacation-rental market here. The deck is finished with matching natural-stone coping — travertine, bluestone, or granite at $40–$80 per linear foot — to cap the pool edge. For a complete dated-pool remodel, the deck, coping, tile, and interior finish are specified together so the whole pool reads as one design.
Freeze-thaw is the deck killer. Hendersonville sits near 2,200 ft and Waynesville above 2,600 ft; both see dozens of sub-freezing nights a winter. Water that wicks into a porous slab, sits in a hard-grouted joint, or ponds against the coping freezes, expands, and spalls the surface — the single most common reason WNC decks fail early. The defenses are specific: a breathable, freeze-rated sealer, self-leveling polyurethane in every expansion joint so the slab can move without cracking, and dense frost-rated stone. It is the same physics that drives our frost-rated tile and coping spec, and skimping on it is the most expensive mistake mountain owners make.
Slope and drainage on a hillside lot. WNC pools are cut into terraces and switchback driveways, so a deck has to manage water coming at it from uphill as well as off its own surface. We re-grade for positive fall away from the shell, then add trench and channel drains on the uphill side to intercept snowmelt and storm runoff and pipe it to daylight well clear of the pool. Get this wrong and the sub-base washes out, the deck settles, and hydrostatic pressure builds under the shell — the chain of failures behind many water-loss and structural calls we take across Buncombe and Transylvania counties.
Access, season, and code. When a paver truck or concrete pump can't reach a terraced lot above Tryon or a gated Jackson County community, material gets moved by buggy and barrow, adding labor a flatland quote never carries. The mountain swim season is short — roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day — so the smart schedule is a fall or winter deck build that cures and seals before opening day. And for HOA, hotel, and club decks — public pools under the NC rules — the deck must meet commercial slip-resistance and an ADA accessible route to the water, which we build into the scope from day one.
