What a saltwater conversion is — and when a WNC pool needs one.

A saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool. The difference is where the chlorine comes from. Instead of you adding tablets or liquid, a salt chlorine generator (SCG) passes the water through an electrolytic cell that splits dissolved salt into chlorine on-site, continuously, then lets it recombine back into salt — so the same salt is used over and over. You dissolve pool-grade salt to roughly 3,000 ppm, about one-tenth the salinity of seawater, low enough that most swimmers can't taste it. The pump, filter, and plumbing you already have usually stay; the conversion adds the cell, a flow switch, and a power center wired to NEC Article 680.

Conversion makes sense when you're tired of buying, storing, and handling chlorine; when chlorine smell and bleached swimsuits bother the household; or when a vacation rental needs clean, low-odor water with less hands-on dosing between guests. It's also a natural add-on during a bigger project — a dated-pool remodel or a variable-speed equipment upgrade — because the equipment pad is already open. What it is not is a chemistry fix: salt water won't save a failing finish or a leaking shell, and bolting a cell onto a 20-year-old plaster interior just accelerates its decline. The single most important number on a conversion is cell sizing. We measure the pool's gallons, then size the salt chlorine generator (SCG) to 1.5–2× pool volume per manufacturer spec — undersizing is the most common reason a conversion can't hold chlorine in July. We inspect the interior finish, coping stone, and heater for salt compatibility, and check the NEC Article 680 bonding grid and grounding before any salt touches the water. Finish & metal-protection plan

Salt is harder on aging plaster, soft natural stone, and older heater components. If the interior is past its service life, we recommend pairing the conversion with a resurface to an ANSI/APSP/ICC/NPC-12-rated quartz or pebble finish. We install a sacrificial zinc anode on the bonding wire so it corrodes instead of your ladders, rails, light niche, and heater heat-exchanger — the single cheapest insurance on a salt pool.

Equipment install & licensed electrical

The salt cell mounts last in the return line — after the filter and heater — with a flow switch so it can't fire dry. Add salt & balance the water

We add pool-grade solar salt to roughly 3,000 ppm (about one-tenth the salinity of seawater — most swimmers can't taste it) and balance the water to a neutral LSI saturation index per PHTA/CPO guidance, including cyanuric-acid stabilizer to protect the generated chlorine from WNC's summer UV. Salt fully dissolves over 24 hours with the pump running before the cell is switched on.

The cell is the wear part — it's a stack of coated titanium plates that slowly depletes — so we match the generator to a brand you can get replacement turbo cells for locally, and we rate it to 1.5–2× pool volume rather than the bare minimum. Finish compatibility is where conversions go wrong. Salt at swimming concentration is mild, but over years it is harder on aging white marcite plaster, soft natural-stone coping like some travertine and limestone, and the copper and steel in older heat-exchangers and fittings. Modern quartz aggregate (SGM Diamond Brite, CL Industries Krystalkrete) and exposed pebble (PebbleTec, StoneScapes) interiors are salt-friendly and what we recommend when a resurface is on the table — they also carry 10–20+ year service lives that justify converting at the same time. For the coping and deck, we seal porous stone and re-detail the expansion joint and drainage during a tile and coping or deck renovation so salt-laden splash-out drains away from the stone instead of wicking into it.

The cheapest protection on the whole system is a sacrificial zinc anode wired into the bonding grid. Zinc is more reactive than the steel, copper, and stainless in your ladders, rails, light niche, and heater, so it corrodes first and gets replaced for a few hundred dollars instead of your equipment failing. It is standard on every conversion we do — leaving it off to save $150–$400 is how owners end up replacing a heat-exchanger years early.

What converting a mountain pool to salt actually involves.

Two things make a Western North Carolina conversion different from a flatland Florida one: freeze-thaw and access. It can if the conversion is done blind — which is why we plan the finish and metal first. Salt at 3,000 ppm is mildly aggressive to aging white plaster, soft natural-stone coping, and older heater components over time. Sound quartz and pebble interiors handle it well, so if your interior finish is past its 8–15 year life we pair the conversion with a resurface to a salt-rated finish under the ANSI/APSP/ICC/NPC-12 plastering standard. Can any existing in-ground pool be converted to saltwater?

The deciding factors are the condition of the interior finish, the type of coping and deck stone, and whether the heater has a salt-compatible heat exchanger. Do saltwater systems work well in cold mountain climates?

The real risk is freeze-thaw: water inside the cell and flow switch can freeze and crack the housing.
